GreenLight Laser

The GreenLight Laser technology vaporizing prostate tissue

What does GreenLight Laser- Moxy Fiber treat?

The GreenLight Laser technology is one of the technologies that our doctors use to treat a condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men. This condition refers to enlargement of the prostate gland, which squeezes the urethra. This enlargement can lead to difficulty urinating, incontinence (lack of control of urination), waking up several times in the night to urinate, urinary tract infections, or other serious kidney problems.

Performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthetic with sedation, the GreenLight Laser treatment is a no-incision procedure in which one of our highly trained doctors places a telescope into the urethra (the tube that drains urine from the bladder to the tip of the penis) up to the prostate gland. Once the probe is inserted, the doctor feeds a laser fiber into the urethra to gently and quickly vaporize the prostate tissue that was squeezing the urethra. This tissue removal will enable urine to more freely flow through the urethra during urination.

Can complications occur?

While GreenLight Laser has fewer complications than other surgical treatments, some side effects of the treatment still occur. This procedure has been shown to have shorter hospital stays and fewer complications than traditional prostate surgery. Common to all prostate surgeries, sexual side effects may include retrograde ejaculation, or in rare instances, erectile dysfunction. Patients may experience problems holding urine (incontinence), which may be related to the surgery or to changes in the bladder or related to the enlarged prostate.

Numerous research studies have reviewed patient outcomes following GreenLight Laser treatments, which include:

  • 88% reduction in the symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate
  • 98% improved quality of life
  • 170% improvement in urine flow, and an
  • 84% reduction in the amount of urine retained in the bladder after voiding.
